Yet another Green Flag!

Pupils at St Luke’s have once again been awarded a prestigious Eco-Schools’ Green Flag.
This academic year, students at St Luke’s have once again received international accreditation for their exceptional work in promoting sustainability and raising environmental awareness amongst their peers.

The Eco-Schools programme, established in 1994, is now implemented in over 70 countries worldwide. In 2023-24, more than 1.4 million pupils attended an Eco-School in England. The programme follows a tried-and-trusted seven-step framework, that encourages young people to explore a variety of environmental issues before spearheading environmental action in their school and local community.

Since St Luke’s first engaged with the Eco-Schools’ programme in 2011, accomplishments have included 7 previous Green flags and the Primary Award for Green Education
This year pupils impressively built on these achievements by focusing on 3 key issues: Biodiversity, School Grounds and Waste. The Eco-Committee then successfully delivered a diverse range of activities including the greening of our school site, planting of new trees in the KS1 playground, recycling of 'difficult to recycle' materials such as plastic pen waste and ink cartridges and the lunchtime litter busters!

Speaking about their achievements staff member Dean Scott said, "The pupils are the real leaders and push me to ensure we get involved with lots of new things. We have worked with Zero Carbon Schools, Tree's for Cities and Terracycle this year as well as delivering whole school assemblies on recycling and global warming. One of our Eco committee also went up to Parliament to address the crowd at the end of the climate relay".
Pupil Ella, 11, stated, "I love being involved in the Eco Committee. We can change the world and make it a better place and clear up the mess left by the adults!"

Eco-Schools England Manager, Adam Flint, said: "The Eco-Schools’ Green Flag is an international benchmark that demonstrates a commitment to fighting climate change and high standard of sustainable practice. Students and staff who earn this award deserve recognition for their dedication toward protecting our planet. Every day, they demonstrate that each of us can contribute to making our planet a better, more sustainable, place."
