Sports Opportunities
Sports and Physical Education
PE is a favourite subject for many of the students at St Luke's. It's a great way for them to burn off energy while improving their fitness, physical skills and self-discipline. They are also taught to work hard, push themselves and persevere (growth mindset), as well as developing focus & concentration, mental strength (an important life skill to have), competitive skills, teamwork and sportsmanship. These qualities are also encouraged in their approach to their classwork.
In PE our children will learn:
- How to play various sports: football, tennis, hockey, handball, netball, tag rugby, athletics and more)
- Gymnastics & dance
- Swimming (Year 4&5)
- Boxercise (KS2)
- Self-defence (Years 5&6)
At lunchtimes, the children are provided with a variety of sports equipment for them to play and develop their skills further and adults work with them as extra development.
They are also encouraged to participate in sports outside of school. On the recommendation of the PE teacher, many of our ‘gifted & talented’ sporting students train in athletics, tennis, karate, football, gymnastics and basketball.
At the end of an academic year, we have our Sports Day for the whole school. Foundation & KS1&2 sports days are run by our House Captains, who have taken over from Langdon School Sports Partnership. These are competitive events (including our parents) where the winning House (5 teams are named after St Luke's 5 Core Values - Respect, Compassion, Perseverance, Trust and Forgiveness) win the House Trophy.
Sports Achievements
Over the past 3 years, St Luke's has raised their profile in Newham Competitions. Currently, St Luke's is a top 3 school – normally finishing in first, second or third in competitions run by Langdon Sports Partnership and The Newham Sports School associations. We have been very successful in football, winning 2 football leagues and 1 tournament and finishing 2nd in 5 competitions (Years 1 to Year 6) in the past two academic years. This is an excellent achievement for a one form-entry school.
Our boys' football team had an excellent campaign last season, remaining unbeaten in the 6-a-side and 9-a-side competitions (see below). Unfortunately they lost on penalties in the finals of both tournaments! So far this season, they have won all their games and are determined to get to the finals again.
Our girls are borough champions having won the 6-a-side and 9-a-side league for the last two years and have had a good start to the season as well. Girls' football is now very popular at St Luke's with over 50 girls participating in football clubs in and outside of school (see below).
We have also have had success in basketball (our Y5/6 boys became Borough champions on 19th December, 2018, see below), handball, athletics, netball and gymnastics, finishing in the top 3 of each of these sports. Again, this is an amazing achievement for a school of our size.
This academics year, the students are determined to continue this success, winning silverware where possible but also competing with great sportsmanship.
